Davannah at 8 years

We lost Savannah at 14 years young and miss her dearly. She was spry and energetic until the last few weeks, running with and training the youngsters here. She's pictured above at8 years of age. Please take a moment to read her story below and consider bringing a rescue Dane into your life.


Savannah's Story

 

Savannah's Story:
A homeless person, who could not afford to feed her (and his Dalmatian too, once they were grown) turned Savannah into the local shelter. Savannah had belonged to his friends (also homeless) until two weeks prior, but they had decided to go on the road again and could not take her. Betty Thomas, at the Great Dane Rescue of Northern California, found her at the shelter and had her transported to the Great Dane rescue in San Jose, CA. There, Betty had her checked out by the vets at the Burbank pet hospital, vaccinated and spayed. Savannah had spent only 4 days with Betty, at the rescue, when I called and Betty told me she had the perfect playmate for Jester. Jester was 5 months old then and Savannah approx. 1 year old. You don’t really get much of a choice with Betty – her job is to make lifelong matches and, as always, it was a match made in Heaven. Savannah (who was actually, formerly Sierra) fit right in from the start and Jester IDOLIZED her! She peed, he peed, she dug, he dug.... he would squish himself into a tiny ball on the corner of a dog bed, just to share it with her. They are, to this day, inseparable and Savannah is the den mother at Davishire Danes. From teaching foster care dogs the ropes to bringing puppies into line, Savannah looks after all of us. Savannah's greatest contribution however, is to the seniors in Marin. You see, Savannah is a certified therapy dog and her friends at the convalescent homes love her and look forward to her visits. It is truly heartwarming to hear the squeals of delight from her patients as she bathes their faces with kisses, performs a few tricks for treats or simply lays her head lightly on their now fragile laps for a few strokes on the head. Savanna and Hamlet

Savannah and Hamlet on a Lazy Sunday afternoon.

 

Hamlet is the house cat and, to let you in on the secret, HE rules the house, HE trains the puppies........ and well... sometimes he naps too. Hamlet was found by a co-worker, in a bag, with his brothers and sisters. He took over the house as an itty-bitty kitten. None of the Danes would dare question him, yet he rules with a soft paw. Though he plays with them and lets them give him a good bath, never once, according to Hamlet, has a Dane deserved so much as a scratch on the nose.
